birth of a paipo!

mike sent me this via surfapig@live.comMike, Not sure if you remember me or not, but my son Michael  and I stopped by your booth at the Boardroom last weekend and were chatting about Paipos and my Del Cannon board.  Well attached are a couple photos of the Dextra Paipo that I picked up a while back and the Paipo that John Culqui and I did for the Board Art Benefit.  I used the Dextra as inspiration for the board and an old Glassic shortboard for the foam.  The board measures 3’-10-1/2” x 18-1/2” nose x 16-1/2” tail x 1-3/4”.  It has double 6 cloth with a sand polish and a 5-1/2” mini slant “D” fin.  We called it “The Republic Star”.  It was a ode to California. Here is a link to the board on the Board Art benefit site,http://boardartbenefit.com/community/board-art-john-culqui/  . It was great chatting with you and very cool of you to help me out with my Del questions, I really appreciate it.  I hope the rest of the show was good. Thanks again, Mike Schoen

thanks mike! super rad!

pig pen!

steve holgate sent me this via surfapig@live.comHey Mike, Had such a blast Saturday at the Sacred Craft Show. Nice catching you at your booth and chatting boards and hunting! I am sending you a shot of about half my quiver. The Velzy I found on Craigslist a few weeks ago is at the head of my "Pig Pen" group photo! You will find my 1960ish Yater attached I bought last month attached for your viewing pleasure! The guy I got the board from took a near perfect Yater and sanded the top before placing outside by some ivy. The roots grew through the glass and actually are on the foam creating the discoloration. Couple of days of sanding and polishing and she did clean up pretty nice. Aloha, Steve

stoked on that grip! it was great to catch up! what a great time this past weekend! cheers!! thanks for the email!

wayne rich, preaching!
the bing family island!
below: the master. ...on that note: i am so humbled by matt "magic hands 'the phoenix'" calvani and Margaret (the shot caller)'s value in my existence. many times, i feel as if i'm a busted up ole ho-dad.  i mean ...family, career, surfing... but got dang! they got their shit going on over there! tradition , innovation, honor, craftsmanship, and integrity! thank you for the inspiration!
for all it's worth, this show forced people to see surfboards can be built by hand. that is where they are from.......... crazy times we live in!

any idea?

wade sent me this from his friend steve via surfapig@live.com: Hey Wade, Here is a few shots of the Velzy Original Pig I bought on Craigslist. It was made for a guy in Ventura who knew Dale. Board was ordered in the last year or so Dale was alive. Wall hanger in an office never has touched the water. I bought it for $500. I have been told that Terry Martin or Jim Phillips may have shaped it due to Dale's health conditions. No signature with the serial number 96084. Aloha, Steve

jim, andrew..any info?

inspiration!

The Surf Board Show is in a few days. Super STOKED!! I look forward to catching up with friends, and clocking some insane people watching. I hope to get a chance to chat with some pig enthusiast too! BING SURFBOARDS has some information about the show: check it out!

...on that note!

Erik sent me this via surfapig@live.comHey Mr. Black, Just wanted to show you the pig I shaped with the help of the Marc Andreini pig discussion and James from Sunset Shapers up here in San Francisco.  I used the dimensions that Marc Andreini gave you along with all the other details in that discussion.  Thanks to Marc, you and James for the inspirations and help.  Keep it coming!  Erik Luna

I have to say, the post above, and the previous post give this site meaning. SO STOKED to see people getting after it!!!! i updated the BLUE MAGAZINE POST from last year with a translation. I'll have that magazine, some books and a few other periodicals of interest to pig enthusiast at the show this weekend. i'll have a few used pigs from various buddies for sale there too. stop by for a chat!

shea's pig! and a reminder!!!!

shea sent me this via surfapig@live.comHey Mike!

Love the Surf a pig site! Was inspired to shape one of my own from all the pig goodness on your site! Opted to go with a flex type fin VS the regular D style, hopefully loosens it up a little bit :) Attached are some photos, and here is the link to my surfboard blog post on it!  Hope you dig it! Thanks for having a look! -Shea

thanks for the contribution Shea! it's posts like this that stoke this site!!!!!

also, i'd like to take this opportunity to remind any and all about the booth this weekend in Del Mar. stop by and chat about swine, or stop by and watch other people do weird shit. cheers!
