the surfers journal is an amazing publication with incredible resources. i regularly check their website. they have this "gem of the week". check the one of Jim Richards Hot curling in 1952. surfing used to be different. journal's website:

In a surprise announcement, President Barack Obama has granted underground surf film makers Earnest Humperdankle and Speefnarkle a two million dollar National Endowment for the Arts. The decision was made based on their latest collaboration, Jazz The Glass, and Obama admitted his love of the ocean did factor into his decision.
