david imlay is an extraordinary painter.
i shot the picture below of my beloved sliders point, bing feral pig, and my ZAP wetsuit.
david imlay painted it below: hand , eye, paint brush, paint, canvas.
david sent me this via surfapig@live.com: Hey Mike~I'm friends with Jason Arnold and was wondering if it'd be ok for me to paint a version of this shot(attached)? I'm a working artist up in San Francisco but born and raised in San Juan Capo where I still visit with my wife for work, family and of course surfing. I actually went to the first surf trip with Jason and I think he met with you about Illustrating a children's book? I missed last years trip but my wife and I are going to try and make up for it this year.Anyway, you can check out my stuff at www.davidimlay.com and there's some San O beach related work in the Suburban section- still need to update with a few more new ones.Let me know if you're ok with me painting from this- if not no problemo. Hope all is well. ~Dave
John Cherry is a wizard.
JC sent me the following via surfapig@live.com: Hi Mike, How’s it going? I wanted to send some photos of the Gordie pig that I am finally getting to work on. I am just about finished repairing dings, replacing old foam with new and filling other minor snaggles, then sanding for a new, two-tone opaque-resin color coat (stringers and logo taped off of course) and gloss coat. This board is super solid and straight except for the old dings. It has zero delam issues. I was able to get Gordies beautiful black walnut and teak fin off of the board and out of the glass very cleanly and restore it to pretty much new condition. I will glass it and reinstall it with the original 1” clear bead. It will be a stunning restoration of a truly classic board of that era. Then………I am getting ready to do a 9-7 reproduction of the board in balsa and redwood. I have some superb, ultra-light balsa set aside for the project. I plan on taking then both to this year’s “Boardroom” at Del Mar as a tribute to Gordie, along with a couple other new wood boards. I figured you might be interested in seeing what I have going on. Aloha Bro,JC

i'm 'bout to print up some shirts, try to sell some and raise some money to grab the sites for this year's luau in late june. FAMILY. period. surfapig is part of my family. jason arnold drew this and all my other logos up. that genius is a wizard. straight up. draws like I teach math. no matter what... this year's luau is sure to be real. surf, camp, eat, converse, and enjoy. i am so humbled by these luaus. it has been so nice to have so many enthusiast of so many generations gathered in one place at one time. thank you to all who support it!!!!!!!
